The importance of regular dental visits
Everyone knows they should see a dentist regularly, but why do we need to go, really?
And why so frequently? They’re not always cheap and they’re not covered by Medicare. If you don’t have private health insurance, regular dental check-ups can add up quickly.
At Sunshine Smiles Dental, we believe oral care shouldn’t cost a fortune. If you’re in Coolum Beach, you can take advantage of our affordable fees at your next dental check-up – here’s why having one is so important!
How often should you go to the dentist?
Some dentists recommend 6 months, others say each year. It varies a bit depending on your lifestyle and current level of oral health. If you smoke, have oral piercings, or eat a lot of sugar, you might need to visit more often.
If you’re undergoing a treatment or have a lot of tooth decay, your dentist may ask you to come back even more frequently. You may need to revisit every three months, or even every month. This lets your dentist monitor your progress and address new problems before they get worse.
If in doubt, it’s better to go more frequently than less. At your next appointment at Sunshine Smiles Dental, you can ask your dentist when you should visit them again.
Regular dental check-ups save you money
At Sunshine Smiles Dental, we’re proud to offer a $95 or gap-free new patient exam* right here in Coolum Beach. For one low price, you get:
- A comprehensive oral exam
- Intra-oral photos
- Oral cancer screening
- Treatment plan and cost estimate (if required)
On the other hand, corrective dental procedures are a lot more expensive. According to finder.com.au, simple fillings can cost up to $240 each, dental crowns can cost over $2000, and full dentures cost over $3000 for a full set.
So if your regular check-up prevents even one cavity in a year, you’ve saved a lot of money.
Sunshine Smiles Dental is proud to accept most major health funds. We’re also preferred providers for NIB, HCF, and Westfund. With low fees and interest-free payment plans available, the cost of a dental check-up is nothing to worry about.

The deep clean is more important than you think
We’ve all seen that video where someone leaves a tooth in a bottle of Coca-Cola for a week. It quickly decays as the acids in the drink eat through the enamel.
(if you haven’t seen it, you can watch it on YouTube here)
Most of us don’t leave our teeth in sitting in soft drink all the time, but we do still have acids and sugars in our mouths most of the time. Even when you brush well at home, some stays stuck to your teeth and can cause decay.
That’s where regular dental visits come in handy. The scale and clean at your Sunshine Smiles Dental check-up is a lot more thorough than your usual twice-daily brush. We use specialised tools and tiny mirrors to look at your whole mouth and clean everywhere – even below your gum line.
We also use a polish and remineralising treatment which makes your teeth feel smooth and slick. It stops plaque from sticking and can help keep your mouth healthy for longer. You can’t do that at home!
Prevention is better than cure
A few decades ago, people mostly went to the dentist to fix tooth problems that had already happened. Luckily, science has come a long way since then. Nowadays, we’re much better at preventing problems.
Your dentist does a thorough check of your mouth at your appointment. If they notice lots of build-up, they can make sure you know to take extra care when brushing. They can also recommend specific products or routines to keep your mouth healthy.
Did you know that dentists can prescribe specialised toothpaste? If you have weak enamel or a lot of cavities, your dentist at Sunshine Smiles can help you get high-fluoride treatment from a pharmacist to prevent more damage.
Dentists can also help identify breathing problems and sleep apnoea. As the people who look at your mouth the closest, they’re sometimes the first to notice if your airways aren’t quite right. Your regular dental check-up can help more than just your teeth!
Early intervention is better
Prevention is better than cure. But when preventing tooth damage doesn’t work out, treating it earlier is better than waiting until it’s bigger.
Cavities don’t form overnight, but they do form quicker than you might expect. It can take as little as 6-12 months before a cavity needs attention. If you see a dentist regularly, you have a much better chance of catching them early and preventing major dental work later on.
At your routine appointment, your dentist checks for oral cancer, gum disease, damage, and more. If they see these things in the early stages, they can help you before it gets harder (and sometimes more expensive) to treat.
If nothing else, come to the dentist to get a toothbrush. Most dentists can provide them to their patients for free. We also have toothpaste samples, dental floss, and other small dental hygiene items that you can take home.
It’s best to replace your toothbrush every 3 months. If you come to the dentist every 6 months, you can get almost half of all your toothbrushes free.
